artist Marilyn Barkhouse was considered something of an artistic prodigy
at a very early age. Born on Prince Edward Island in the Canadian
Maritimes, the artist attended the fine art program at Acadia University
in Nova Scotia at the age of fifteen. She went on to graduate early
from the Graphic Design and Fine Art program at Annapolis Campus in
Middleton, Nova Scotia in order to begin competition in the gallery
circuit at the age of only nineteen.
Barkhouse has exhibited broadly and has gained considerable recognition for the
photo-realistic quality of her work. Through commissions and
contracts, the subject matter of Marilyn's artwork has expanded to
encompass international wildlife as well as portraiture of domestic
animals in pen-and-ink, pastels and acrylics, her favorite mediums.
Marilyn has her studio near the popular Cape Blomidon provincial park in
Nova Scotia, and gains inspiration from the wildlife that she can see from
her studio window, including deer, coyote, fox and bald eagles. The
artist enjoys the quiet and serenity of a rural, pastoral life along with
an extensive menagerie of pets, all previously abused or abandoned animals
to whom she has given a warm and loving home.
