Born and brought up in Giggleswick, a village in England's Yorkshire Dales, Carol Lawson relates that her mother told her that from the moment she could hold a pencil, she has never stopped drawing. Living in the country, she always loved to draw and paint from nature: flowers, animals, birds - and had a particular interest in fairy tales, which she read constantly.
The artist attended art college at Brighton University, where she gained a degree in Art and Design. From there she began work as a free-lance illustrator, working in editorial, packaging, advertising and publishing. During the 1980's she produced work for the Franklin Mint, illustrating Grimm's fairy tales for their second edition of porcelain collector plates. Following that series, she illustrated fifty classic fairy tales for a set of miniature plates and created the art for many other series of collectibles including figurine designs of the "United Nations Children."
At the same time, she continued to work in publishing, illustrating a book of classic fairy tales and also writing and illustrating her own children's books. She had accumulated a collection of teddy bears (over 200!) and wrote and illustrated the "Upstairs Downstairs Bears" books, with the characters based on bears from her collection. A stop-frame animation series of 26 episodes, based on the books, was produced for television in 2001.
The artist has just completed the illustrations for an edition of "The Nutcracker", due to be published later in 2011, and is currently working on limited edition prints of landscapes of the Sussex countryside in which she lives with her husband.
